This is a 2 year, full award for those entering the programme with a second class honours degree (2:2 or above, or equivalent) and who can evidence that they are able to work independently at a high level in the field of education studies. The programme is validated by University of Bolton, currently graded outstanding by OFSTED, as one of the leading universities for Initial Teacher Education. As part of your studies you will be required to carry out a teaching placement for a minimum of 100 hours of teaching over the duration of the programme. Placements are available in house, but due to demand, are on a first come, first served basis.

This is a teacher training course for those who wish to teach in the compulsory and post-compulsory sectors of education; for example, in adult and community education, secondary education, further and higher education, sixth form colleges, the prison and probation services, pre-employment training and work-based learning. The qualification can be used towards professional formation to gain QTLS. Delivered on a part-time basis over 2 years, trainees will be required to attend one evening per week (Wednesday) plus 2 Saturday workshops throughout each academic year.

Entry Requirements

  • An honours degree (or equivalent) in the subject area in which you wish to teach
  • English and Maths Level 2 or an ability to achieve on programme.
  • You will also require Enhanced Closure clearance through the Disclosure and Barring Service and a health declaration prior to enrolment on the course

Modules:

Year 1:

Preparing for Education and Training: a 20 credit, level 4 module. The purpose of the module is to enable you to focus on practical and theoretical issues involved in planning and preparing to teach, developing your planning and preparation skills to deliver and evaluate a short micro -teach session.

Promoting Positive Behaviour: 10 credits. The module aims to enable trainees to manage behaviours in a range of learning environments, including understanding the characteristics and impact of behaviours, the related legislation and organisational policies.

Integrating English and Maths in teaching and learning: 10 credits. Primarily concerned with skills development, the module has two aims; to expand the trainee skills in developing inclusive approaches to literacy and numeracy within teaching and to explore personal development of these subjects within their own vocational context,

Teaching, Learning and Assessing: 20 credits. This module enables the trainee to understand the theories, principles and applications of assessment, learning and communication and apply them to inclusive learning and teaching.

Year 2:

Professionalism and Quality in the Curriculum: 20 credits. This module introduces you to curriculum development and evaluation and the wider professional practice involved in education and training.

Professional Research Project: 20 credits. Trainees are required to undertake evidence based practice within their own specialist area to produce creative and innovative teaching and learning resources.

Professional Practice Portfolio: 20 credits. This module runs across the programme and enables trainees to demonstrate effective practice of teaching and to understand an apply theories, principles and models of reflective practice

What Teaching, Learning and Assessment methods will trainees experience?

Teaching, learning and assessments will feature lectures, student’s presentations, student research, narratives, discussion, group and individual work, tutorials, practical work and work based learning. All modules have an element of written assignment work, presentation and evidence as practice. During the two year programme, trainees will be required to have 8 classroom observations, 4 of which are graded.

  • Land Based Studies, including Agriculture

  • Performing Arts
  • Sport

On successful application to the programme, students are required to secure a work based placement to cover the 100 hours (minimum) over the 2 year period. These can be in schools and/or colleges in the area but please liaise with the Course Tutor, prior to finalising, as travel needs to be considered. Previous students have attended placements at Beauchamp College, Stephenson College, John Ferneley Academy, Stamford College and Derby College.
